The Legend of Nick the Mad

In Stampvale, every stamp-smith has a reputation.

... some are known for their precision.

... some are known for their patience.

... and one was known for never, ever losing his cool.

They called him Slick Nick. Smooth, chill, collected. He could drive a stamp into hardened carbon steel with a single swing of his mini sledge, and he never once needed a second strike. Golfers swore they could feel the calm in every impression.

Then came the night Unicoop the Cursed tore through the stamping hall.

Owlala, shattered. Lady Luck, scattered. Infinite Possibilities, twisted into a shape no one could name. Years of work lay smashed across the workshop floor while Ghowstie’s laughter echoed off the anvils.

He sat down in the ashes, crossed his legs the way Owlala always taught him, closed his eyes... and breathed.

In...

Out...

In...

Something snapped.

Not loud. Not the way you’d expect. Nick the Mad doesn’t yell. He doesn’t throw clubs. He doesn’t snap his putter over his knee on 18.

He just smiles.... and that’s what should scare you.

When he opened his eyes, his heart had grown horns. The love he’d hammered into every stamp had burned down into something hotter, and a whole lot meaner. His legs had folded into an endless loop, a broken piece of Infinite Possibilities. Now there’s no limit to what he’ll do, and no end to how long he’ll wait. Look closely and his arms still spell O and W. Whatever he’s become, he’s still Ow&Co. underneath.

Word spread fast. Five of the hottest flat sticks on the East Coast came to Stampvale to challenge him. Each one was a Fireboy, blessed with a legendary streak of one-putts, and each one swore he couldn’t lose.

Five matches.

Five putts.

Five X’s.

Their burning heads still drift around him, a warning to anyone who thinks the quiet guy in the foursome is an easy match.

You’ve played with him. He’s the one who doesn’t flinch after a three-putt, who just nods after a lip-out, who says “that’s good”... and somehow makes it sound like a threat.

Since that night, Nick rides with a crew called the East Coast Putters, and they leave the same mark wherever they go: a skull, two crossed putters, and a grin.

Somewhere out there, Scoops is still searching for the Un-Stamp.

Nick isn’t looking for it.

He likes it this way.

So the next time you lip one out and feel that slow heat creeping up the back of your neck... breathe.

Nick’s already smiling.
